Looking through magazines and print media, makes my mind connect images from the past to the new images in my future artistic collages and photographed assemblages.
Seeing animals frozen in time, sealed inside a cube of glass or a jar of alcohol preservatives, can make you think about our own fragile sense of time and space in the world.
Take the time to smell the roses, but do we take the time to truly see the rose we are smelling. Close up, nature can look like so many different things. The petal of a flower can become a flame. The blades of grass look like brush strokes of a master painting.
After being asked to shoot a portfolio of hats for a milliner and friend, I saw the wooden forms that are used to give life and form to the material. When the blocks are isolated against a plain neutral background, the objects are monumentalize and the forms can be realized as a sculpture and not just as a means to an end.
The definition of photography is literally drawing with light, but we do not think of a photo as a drawing. Using a pen light gives the photographer the ability to isolate parts of an object and highlight another part. The result is an image that is full of life, light and energy.
